BookThing

BookThing is my book…thing - an ongoing chronicle quotidian of sorts - a collection of stand-alone “episodes” I read aloud for you. I tailor a bouquet of them for each reading. (The order and final selection from the bouquet-pool usually changes during the reading, as it depends on you too, and what fits the moment.)

I’ve referred to BookThing as an awkward love poem for Basel - the city I live in. But with time it’s also covering ever more of my home of Vancouver Island on Canada’s westcoast, when I can get my animal body back to those parts where it deeply needs to be.

It also includes my Tales from the Land of Voiceover series where I share with you some of what goes on in the world of my work as a voiceover artist.

Observations. Encounters.

97% English. 3% Swiss German. 100% Happened.

Sometimes it feels like it’s about everything and everyone - so there’s a good chance you’re in it.

After the first reading met r*e*s*o*n*a*n*c*e, we sat around a table over a glass that night and asked: “What is it?”

I’ve decided it’s “Sit-down”. Not stand-up. Not a reading from a novel. Not spoken word. Not poetry. It will be what it is that night. (And maybe that’s all of this plus something else.)

I might play a song. There might be a slide show or field recordings. There might be a book published at some point. Right now though, it’s best I read for you in person.

I’m thinking the next space could be the arthouse cinema with red seats where I played a concert. But it could also be in the brick cellar with the little bar on Nadelberg. Or the room with the beautiful wooden floor in Café Mitte. Or Theater Teufelhof, or the Foyer Public of Theater Basel. Or the Vault Café in Nanaimo or somewhere on Saltspring Island. Or the Protection Island Community Hall. Or Kaufleuten Zürich - that stunner of a heritage venue in the heart of the city. Or at one of the very raw and wild edges of the world - back home at Clayoquot Sound Theatre in Tofino.

You decide with me.

In the meantime, it continues to be written.
